In a turn of events, what seems to be an offhand joke has become a multibillion-dollar lawsuit that can make all businesses related to voting systems go belly up.
The CEO of the Dominion voting system joked, “We stole the election” at the NRI (National Rodent Association)gala at Maralago Golf club. Robert Murdoch, the CEO of Fox Friends and Family, was in attendance, and he quickly called Glenn Beck, Tucker Carlson, and other conspiracy theorists at Fox. They filed the lawsuit within minutes while the event was still going on.
Our reporters reached out to Dominion, and they clarified that their CEO is not a native English speaker, so he meant, “we solved the election and not we stole the election.”
A few moments later:
Dominion Voting Systems, a U.S. election technology company, has filed multiple lawsuits against Fox News for defamation. The company claims that Fox News spread false and baseless conspiracy theories about Dominion’s voting machines and its role in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election.
In particular, Dominion alleges that Fox News hosts and guests made false statements on their shows, claiming that Dominion’s voting machines were designed to change votes in favor of Joe Biden and that the company was part of a conspiracy to rig the election. These claims have been thoroughly debunked, and no evidence supports them.
Dominion claims that Fox News knew these claims were false yet continued to spread them to boost ratings and increase viewership. The company also alleges that Fox News’ false reporting has damaged its reputation and resulted in financial losses and threats and harassment directed at its employees.
Dominion seeks billions of dollars in damages in its lawsuits against Fox News. Fox News has denied the allegations and has stated that it will vigorously defend itself against the lawsuits. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and how the cases will be resolved remains to be seen.
